Information for Young People

Thank you for signing up to attend a Scouts Speak Up (SSU) course. This one-day course will help you to talk about your Scouting experiences more confidently and positively, and give you an introduction to speaking to the media.

What will I be doing?

This is an active course and will involve you developing and telling your stories about Scouting. You will get out as much as you put in, so please come along ready to have a go and learn by doing – just like you would at any Scouting activity.

When is my course?

The course is on Saturday 9th March at Avonmouth Community Centre, 257 Avonmouth Road, Avonmouth Village, Bristol BS11 9EN. You should arrive from 9am and no later than 9.30am, and you will be finished by 4pm. One of your Unit Leaders might be bringing you to the course and they should provide you with more information about getting to and from the event.

What about food?

Drinks and snacks will be provided throughout the day, but please bring a packed lunch.

What should I wear?

The course will mainly be indoors but you may be walking between different locations on site and doing some activities outside, so please ensure you have suitable clothing and footwear for outdoors. Scout uniform is not required, but please come in your Group/Unit necker.

What do I need to do now?

Please ensure that the Personal Emergency Contact you entered during your registration on EventsAir is available on 9th March, and that you let us know of any changes to medical or dietary requirements by emailing ssu.course@scouts.org.uk.

How can I prepare for the course?

You’ll be learning a lot about communication on the course, and to start you off on this one of our volunteer staff Joe has created two short training videos to introduce you to some background and techniques for communication. Please take the time to watch these before you come to the course, it should take no more than 10 minutes.
