Roverway 2018 will be an incredible European adventure for all 16 – 22 year olds. It will be hosted by Scouting Nederland and is organised by the European Scout Region of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).
The UK Contingent will be made up of participants, their patrol leaders, International Service Team and a Contingent Management Team.
When and where?
From 23 July to 2 August 2018, it will take place in the Netherlands. Over 3,000 participants (aged 16 – 22) from over twenty countries will participate in Roverway.
The participants will be divided into UK Patrols ahead of the event. They will be encouraged to meet regularly, take part in practice camps and gain camping skills in addition to a Nights Away permit.
Roverway is split up into three sections:
The 23 July will start with the Roverway Opening Ceremony against the beautiful backdrop of The Hague, The Netherlands’ Parliament and International City of Justice. The city offers a great venue to kick-start the event. The Opening Ceremony promises to be packed with music, fun and celebration!
The next part of the Roverway Experience is the Paths. Patrols will transfer to their Path of choice, selected by the Patrols ahead of the event, in a mixed international crew. The Paths are located throughout the Netherlands and range from back to basics camping and sailing to cultural heritage and working with young people in a local school. You can decide between supporting a development project to high octane adventure – the choice is yours! The Path aspect of Roverway will take four days to complete. The organisers are working with partners to ensure that the Paths are exciting and engaging for the participants. Paths are to be confirmed but some of the possible ones are:
- Energy Path in the Northern Netherlands, specialised in the energy industry
- Food Path around the university city of Wageningen,
- International justice and peace around The Hague
- Marine ecology Path in the South West
- Innovation Path in the urban region of Region Eindhoven
After completing the Path, Patrols will travel to the central camp based at International Scout and Guide Centre, Zeewolde for the reminder of the event. This will take five days and is a Jamboree-style camp with plenty of atmosphere and things to do. You will camp with your patrol and new friends from across Europe whilst taking part in an exciting on-site programme. The four key aspects of the programme are:
- Live Action Game
- Roverway Academy
- Sailing and water sports
- Programmed activities
On the final day, there will be a Closing Ceremony for everyone to come together and celebrate!
Further information about joining the UK Contingent will be available in 2017.
IST are the unsung heroes of events and we need IST to support the planning and delivery of Roverway 2018. The IST roles vary from programme, site services, through to catering and even stone masonry! There are a varied number of roles that you can undertake to make this Roverway a success for the thousands of participants. Roverways also offer an excellent IST programme including tailored programme and social spaces and places to meet.
Further information about joining the UK Contingent IST will be available in 2017.
Roverway started in Portugal in 2003 and is still considered a new event in the World and European calendar. Previous Roverways have taken place in Portugal, Finland, Iceland, Italy and most recently in France where we took just under 200 Scouts for a summer of adventure and fun. Roverway focuses on developing and enabling young people to become global citizens.
The theme of Roverway 2018 is Opposites Attract. This will focus on the personal development of the participants as part of their role in society. The Roverway will provide the environment in which participants can share experiences, knowledge and ideas whilst having fun!
Information for Counties, Areas and Regions
We are currently in the early stages of our planning for Roverway and the organisers have released very limited information to date. The number of patrols we are able to take as the UK Contingent is still unknown, as is the event fee. However, we would like counties, areas and regions to help us in promoting Roverway and even in selecting young people, patrol leaders and IST attending the event. Further information will be made available to counties, areas and regions by Spring 2017. Thank you in advance for your support.
